10 Questions You should ask yourself when choosing a real estate agent.

  1. Are you a member of The National Association of Realtors? Most brokers require their agents to be a member, but it’s good to check anyway. Check here. RE/MAX of Reading does require its agents to be members. The reason behind this is more important than you might think. The code of ethics holds Realtors to a higher standard. We can be disciplined for not adhering to it. As it was explained to me in my training. “It might be legal, but is it ethical”?
  2. Do you want a Realtor to tell you the truth, or what you want to here? This applies more to sellers. People that are selling their house tend to look at their house as a home. People that are buying a house tend to look at a house as a…… well a house. What is the difference you ask? A home is defined as a place where people live permanently, especially as a family. A house is defined as a structure built for human habitation. Which one would you pay more for? Look I appreciate what makes your house your home. In fact, I want to know! I will do everything in my power to make potential buyers feel like your house, is their next home before they walk through the door! When it comes down to it, a home is filled with your memories therefore it is worth much more to you. A house is a commodity and only worth so much to a buyer based on certain criteria. My goal is to find that happy medium.
  3. Does he or she have a website that will list my home? The quick answer is yes. To prove it just do a quick property search and you will see that you have access to any property you can dream of. Your property will be seen by every licensed agent in Pennsylvania whom is doing a search in the area your home is located. Good Realtors are also willing to front the cost for advertising, as long as you are willing to make a reasonable commitment to them in return. There are roughly eighty websites I will advertise your home with. Not to mention the old fashion print advertising we can choose to do if necessary.
  4. Do you have a personal assistant, team, or staff to handle different parts of the transaction? In my opinion I have the best staff in the world! Not only that, but we also have the best technology in the world! I am really good at a lot of things, but I am not so good at others. The staff I have behind me will make sure that everything is in order so that your buying or selling process is extremely smooth. By having an amazing staff behind me it allows me to focus on what is happening with your purchase or sale. My goal is to put as much time, energy, and effort into your search as you would yourself.
  5. Will your Realtor communicate with you the way I want, and in a timely matter? How many different ways can we communicate this day in age? Phone, email, text, social media? The answer is, whichever way you prefer. I communicate every possible way you can imagine all day long, and I take pride in responding as fast as I possibly can. Your transaction is as important to me as it is important to you. For different reasons? Yes, probably, but between my working hours my clients are the only thing that matters. Throughout my professional life I have had to learn to communicate with people using every option available to us. You can rest assure that I will be very quick to answer any questions or concerns you might have, through our entire process.
  6. What if I’m not quite ready to buy or sell? Completely understandable! When was the last time you bought or sold a house? 5 years ago? Ten? More? Never? A lot of agents will only take on a ready and willing buyer/seller. That isn’t the case with me. Buying and selling a home has many steps. The reason I get paid is because I can guide you through those steps from day 1. Maybe you are 2 years away? Contact me let’s talk about how important buying or selling your home really is? Let’s talk about what it will take to get you there. I can’t spend every waking moment with you. I can’t force you to save the money, or fix your place up, but I can guide you through the entire process, and in my opinion that begins with your first thought. Call me, it doesn’t hurt to talk.
  7. How do you get paid? It’s no secret that Realtors get paid by commission only. I could spend all day talking about working without a base salary, well because I have done it my entire professional career. The misconception? “Commission sales people just want to sell as much as they can for the highest price they can with complete disregard for the client”. The truth? “I am trying to earn a client for life, I want to make sure that when all is said and done you are completely satisfied. I want you to be so satisfied that you can feel comfortable referring me to the people you care about the most in this world”. The commission will be there if I do that. I need to make a living there is no doubt about that, just like you do. My promise to you, I will earn that living, I just get paid a little different.
  8. How accessible am I? Virtually 24 hours. My business hours are 7am to 9pm. If I don’t answer my phone right away, it is simply because I am on the line with another client. I will answer emails and texts as long as I am up, with one exception. I turn my phone off during dinner with my family, and on vacation, hey everyone needs a break right? While I am on vacation I will dedicate 1 hour a day to return emails and phone calls, also there are very capable agents covering for me while I’m gone. You are in very good hands. I do the same for them.
  9. Is this your full time job? Yes, this is what I do. I take it very serious, but I have so much fun with it. I love how personal this industry is. I have been in sales my whole life, but nothing I have done has allowed me to build the relationships I have through this industry.
  10. What else can you do for me as my Realtor? Great question! Does our relationship end after the transaction? Please I hope not! There can be so many life changes that come with buying a home. Getting married, starting a family, changing schools, looking for a daycare, upgrading your new home, getting to know your community, getting involved with your local government, finding a local restaurant or bar to eat at, sing karaoke, or start a trivia team. I am happy to help you out with all of this, I have an extensive network of professionals that I know and trust. They will give you the same service I would, and I will do that for their clients as well. Another question I would ask, does your agent support local small business. I take pride in the fact that I do, and I would never steer you in the wrong direction.
